The Historical Museum collections includes Byzantine and mediavel works, a traditional Cretan
folk collection, photographs from WW II nazi invasion, the re-created study
of Nikos Kazantzakis,
Crete's great modern writer and View of Mt. Sinai and Monastery of St.
Catherine (1578), the only work of El Greco on Crete.
Venetian Heraklion
In Heraklion you will find various object built during the
venetian occupation like: Morosini Fountain, Venetian Loggia etc. The
Koules Fortress (tel. 0810-246211 & 0810 288484) at mole on old harbor.
It is open daily 9 am-1 pm and 4-7pm.
The harbor fort, built on the site of a series of earlier forts, went up between 1523 and 1540, and although
greatly restored, is essentially the Venetian original. Both its
exterior and interior are impressive in their dimensions, workmanship, and details thick walls, spacious chambers, great ramparts,
and cannonballs. Young People will love it. For a dose of peace and beauty
climb up and and walk along the southeast sections of Venetian Walls an
olive tree refuge.
Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis
The tomb is on Martinengo Bastion, at the southern corner of walls, along
Plastira St. Nikos Kazantzakis is the author of The last Temptation
of Christ and Zorba the Greek. The Kazantzakis museum (tel 0810-741689) is
nearby Varvari. The exhibit includes many of the author original
manuscripts, as well as photographs of his theatrical productions.
