A wetland of international importance (RAMSAR) in northern Greece, about 45 kilometres from
Florina in northwest Macedonia. A sacred place of natural beauty, where hundreds of wild
animals and birds can be found living in their natural environment, expanding on thousands
acres. Some of these species are unique in the world.
The Great Prespa (Megali Prespa) is the greatest lake of the Balkans, with an area of 188 sq.
km. It is divided between Greece (38sq. km.), FYROM (the biggest part, about lOOsq. km.)
and Albania.
Little Prespa (Mikri Prespa) has an area of 43sq. km. and belongs almost wholly to Greece;
only a small part lies in Albania.
Prespes constitute one of the ten official National Forests of Greece.
