GREECE: WETLANDS ECOSYSTEMS

Among the wealth and variety of habitats that make up the Greek landscape, the wetlands constitute a particularly significant unity: over 400 lakes, lagoons, fens, marshes, river estuaries and aquatic environments of all kinds - seasonal or permanent, natural or man-made-compose a web of unique ecological and aesthetic value.

In recent years Greece has been implementing a policy of integrated management of wetlands, supporting and promoting activities and projects that contribute to the ecological tourism.
Through appropriate and careful planning, the rare birds and other wildlife, the plants, the traditional occupations of the inhabitants (fishing, stock raising, etc.) and the stunningly beautiful landscape of the Greek wetlands could become the driving force in the development of ecotourism in many parts of the country, while, at the same time, ensuring the desired integrated management of these treasures of nature.

The National Park of the Prespes Lakes (Mikri Prespa and Megali Prespa). A wetland of international importance (RAMSAR) in northern Greece, about 45 kilometres from Florina in northwest Macedonia. A sacred place of natural beauty, where hundreds of wild animals and birds can be found living in their natural environment, expanding on thousands acres. Some of these species are unique in the world.

The Great Prespa (Megali Prespa) is the greatest lake of the Balkans, with an area of 188 sq. km. It is divided between Greece (38sq. km.), FYROM (the biggest part, about lOOsq. km.) and Albania.

Little Prespa (Mikri Prespa) has an area of 43sq. km. and belongs almost wholly to Greece; only a small part lies in Albania.
